Nipples during your Breast Augmentation

Will I lose feeling in my nipples?

It's natural to worry about losing nipple sensation and overall breast sensitivity when considering breast augmentation surgery. This is because the procedure involves altering nerves, which can have an effect on how you feel. The risk is present in other types of breast surgeries too, such as breast lifts or reductions.

The size of the implant is a key factor to consider. The larger the implant, the greater the likelihood of losing nipple sensation. Additionally, individuals with a smaller frame or breasts are more susceptible since the skin and tissues must stretch significantly to accommodate the new implant. Different implant placements and incision types can also affect nipple sensation.

Can I still breastfeed?

Breastfeeding is possible after cosmetic breast surgery, but the surgical technique used may affect milk duct connection to the nipple. Most breast augmentation procedures position implants behind glandular tissue, allowing for breastfeeding.

Can inverted nipples be fixed?

Inverted nipples are a common occurrence, with approximately one in ten people in the UK experiencing them. They typically surface during puberty and may become more pronounced due to pregnancy and breastfeeding. The inward turning of nipples is typically caused by shorter breast milk ducts. While there are varying degrees of severity, surgery may not be necessary for milder cases.

Can the areola be made smaller?

Many individuals, particularly women, are unhappy with the size or shape of their areolas – the pigmented circle of skin surrounding the nipple. The surgery aims to make the areola smaller and more proportional. This is achieved by removing a small circle of skin around the areola and then pulling the surrounding skin inward and stitching it to the resized areola. The outcome is a more harmonious, rounded look.
